The accounting challenges small business & sme face
We have seen these issues repeatedly โ and know exactly how to resolve them.
No time to manage the books
Most small business owners are the CEO, sales person, operations manager, and bookkeeper all at once. We take the accounting completely off your plate so you can focus on the business.
Staying on top of ATO obligations
BAS, payroll, super, PAYG, STP, and annual returns all have different deadlines. Missing any of them attracts penalties. We track every deadline and act before it arrives.
Not knowing your actual financial position
Many small business owners find out how the year went at tax time โ months after the year has ended. We provide monthly reports so you always know exactly where you stand.
Overpaying tax through poor structuring
The wrong business structure โ or no planning before year end โ regularly costs small businesses $5,000โ$20,000+ in unnecessary tax. We review your position before 30 June every year.

Common questions from small business & sme
What accounting services does a small business actually need?
At minimum, most small businesses need: monthly bookkeeping to keep records current, quarterly BAS lodgment, payroll and STP compliance if you have employees, and an annual tax return. Growing businesses also benefit from monthly financial reports, tax planning before year end, and periodic business structure reviews. We offer all of these in fixed-fee monthly packages from $299/month.
What is the difference between a bookkeeper and an accountant?
A bookkeeper records and reconciles transactions โ they keep your records accurate and current. An accountant uses those records to prepare financial statements, lodge tax returns, plan your tax position, and advise on business structure and strategy. ANH Accounting provides both services under one roof through our monthly packages, which means your bookkeeping and tax advice are fully integrated.
How much should a small business pay for accounting?
It depends on the complexity and volume of your business. Our Essential package starts at $299/month and includes monthly bookkeeping, BAS lodgment, and annual tax return. The Professional package at $599/month adds quarterly tax planning, monthly financial reporting, payroll, and a dedicated account manager. Most small businesses with $200kโ$1M turnover find the Professional package provides the best value. We provide a custom quote for businesses over $1M turnover.
Do you work with businesses outside Sydney?
Yes. While we are based in Surry Hills, Sydney, we work with business owners across Australia remotely via Zoom, phone and email. Most of our client interaction happens digitally, and location is no barrier to receiving the same quality of service as our Sydney clients.
What are the BAS due dates, and what happens if I lodge late?
Most businesses lodge quarterly, with BAS generally due on the 28th of the month after quarter end, and extra time often available when lodging through a registered tax agent. Late lodgment can attract failure-to-lodge penalties and interest. We manage your lodgment calendar so you never miss one.
When does payroll tax apply in NSW?
Payroll tax applies once your total Australian wages exceed the Revenue NSW threshold, and related businesses are grouped together. Because the threshold changes, we check the current figure and monitor your wages.
What is Single Touch Payroll and does my business need it?
Single Touch Payroll (STP) requires employers to report wages, tax and super to the ATO each time they pay employees. All employers with staff are now required to use it. We set up STP through Xero and keep you compliant.
Which deductions can a small business claim?
Small businesses can generally claim operating costs, wages, rent, insurance, vehicle and equipment costs and depreciation, provided they relate to earning income and are properly recorded. Equipment purchases may qualify for instant deductions depending on current rules. We identify what you can claim and keep records clean.
How do I know whether I need a bookkeeper or an accountant?
A bookkeeper records and reconciles transactions, while an accountant provides tax, structure and advisory. Most growing businesses need both working together. We provide both so your books feed directly into tax planning.
